What is a Wine Cellar?
A wine cellar is a customized space designed to keep wine at optimal temperature conditions to ensure it ages properly. A wine cellar can store anywhere from a few hundred bottles to many thousands of bottles.
A wine cellar can occupy a storage closet, a niche or alcove, or an entire basement. Wherever you choose to build a wine cellar, the space should be consistently cool, dark, and damp, with a temperature of 50°F-65°F and a humidity level of 50%-70%. Proper temperatures prevent wine from aging prematurely. Humidity keeps corks moist, preventing air infiltration into the bottle, which can lead to wine spoilage.
A personal wine cellar can be large or small, upscale or informal. It’s all a matter of preference. Modern restaurants and hotels often prefer metal racks or hybrid metal and wood designs, which are sleek and modern. Glass and steel wine cellars make a dramatic impact, while wood wine cellars are earthy and traditional.
