    Shelf-Style Wine Rack FAQs

What is a shelf-style wine rack?

Wood shelf wine racks are designed like traditional shelves, letting you stack bottles in neat single rows or in a pyramid shape, depending on the rack style. You’ll find several styles to match your space, including baker-style racks, rectangle-bin shelving, and diamond-bin designs. These versatile wine rack shelves are a great fit for both casual collectors and serious wine enthusiasts.

What are the benefits of a shelf-style wine rack?

Wine shelves have three main advantages: efficient storage, a clean look, and easy access. Depending on the style, a single rack can hold dozens of bottles—perfect for maximizing wine storage in a small footprint. The open design keeps bottles visible and organized, making it easy to grab what you need, and wine shelving looks great in any space.

What are the different types of wine cellar shelving?

Wine shelves come in a variety of configurations. Baker-style racks give you an open, airy look that works well for display. Rectangle-bin racks are simple and versatile, while diamond-bin racks create an eye-catching design that’s also functional. Whether you’re building a home wine cellar or adding a wood shelf wine display for a retail store, you’ll find a style that works for your needs.

How many bottles can a shelf-style wine rack hold?

Our versatile shelf-style wine racks can hold upwards of 90 bottles or more. Depending on the rack you choose, you can stack bottles in a pyramid formation or even store wine boxes on the shelves.

Mix and match different style racks to add visual interest and accommodate different bottle types, including standard wine bottles, champagne bottles, and magnums. With our shelf-style wine racks, it’s easy to scale your setup as your collection grows.

Is wine storage shelving better for home or commercial use?

Wooden shelf wine storage systems are ideal for both residential and commercial use. Shelf-style wine racks have a modular design that is flexible for any space. No matter if you’re storing a few dozen bottles or outfitting an entire wine cellar, you can add additional racks as needed.

How many bottles can I put on each wine rack shelf?

Depending on the specific wine rack shelf you choose, each unit can hold up to 144 bottles. Shelf-style racking is an efficient way to store wine in a small footprint. Whether you’re designing a small wine closet, a slender wine alcove, or an expansive wine cellar, wine shelving systems are a versatile option that can be modified and expanded as your needs change.

Do I need to mount wooden shelf wine racks to the wall?

Wine is heavy, and proper support is key for safety and stability. We recommend that any wood wine rack over 36” tall be anchored to something solid to avoid tipping. This is especially important in earthquake-prone regions.

What material is your wood wine shelving made of?

Our shelf-style wine racks are available in a variety of wood species, including pine, alder, redwood, and mahogany (options may vary by product). Choose from a range of different water-based, low-VOC wood stains to achieve your desired look, including oak, cherry, walnut, black, and greywash.

Each shelf-style rack is planed and milled in-house at our facility in Utah to ensure structural integrity, then sanded to a beautiful finish. The result is elegant yet functional racks designed to last.

Will these racks keep my bottles in the right position?

Yes, our shelf-style wine racks are designed to store bottles horizontally, which keeps the corks moist. This is vital, as a dry cork can shrink and allow air into the bottle. When air enters, oxidation begins, which can alter the wine’s flavor, aroma, and color.

Over time, too much oxygen exposure can turn a good bottle flat, dull, or even sour. Storing bottles on their sides helps prevent this by maintaining a proper seal and protecting the wine’s integrity. Depending on the style shelf you choose, there may or may not be individual slots for wine bottles. If you use our wood wine shelves to store boxes of wine, make sure the wine is turned on its side, especially for longer-term storage.

How long will the wine cellar shelving last?

Our wine cellar shelving is built to last for decades, thanks to high-quality, responsibly sourced wood species like pine, alder, redwood, and grand mahogany. These woods are known for their natural durability and long-term performance, even in active cellar environments. With proper care and handling, your racks should remain sturdy and functional for years.

For added protection, we recommend staining the wood. Staining not only enhances the wood’s appearance but also adds a layer of protection against moisture. This may help preserve the integrity of your wood wine shelving system over time. We offer a variety of low-VOC, water-based wood stains in different colors to suit any aesthetic.
